When it comes to perseverance, faith, and focus, Kaleb Phillips stands out as an incredible example of what hard work and determination can achieve. Recently, Kaleb—an active participant in Family Biz Builder’s NJTL (National Junior Tennis & Learning) Program—won the Arthur Ashe Essay Contest for the state of Mississippi, earning an all-expenses-paid trip (for himself and one parent) to the Atlanta Cup.

This distinguished honor celebrates Kaleb’s growth not only as a tennis player but as a young leader determined to overcome every obstacle in his path.

Rising Above Challenges

At just sixteen, the DeSoto Central High School junior has already faced—and conquered—challenges that might have discouraged others. Diagnosed early with Developmental Delay, ADHD, and ADD, Kaleb experienced significant academic struggles in his early years. But instead of letting those challenges define him, he made a decision to rise above them.

His turning point came through Family Biz Builder, where structured mentorship, study skills training, and tennis development combined to create a foundation for success. With encouragement from his mentors, including Coach Lance Hickman and the Windward Academy team, Kaleb learned how to channel his energy, focus his attention, and build habits that led him from struggling student to honor roll achiever.

Faith, Family, and Fortitude

Kaleb credits his faith, family, and mentors for helping him stay grounded and motivated through every challenge. Whether on the tennis court or in the classroom, he approaches each opportunity with gratitude and discipline—always striving for growth.

“I really am thankful and grateful for being selected to go on this trip,” Kaleb shared.“With great determination and hard work, it has paid off. Even though I reached for the moon, I landed amongst the stars.”

Paying It Forward: From Student to Youth Tennis Coach

Kaleb’s journey has come full circle through the Pay It Forward Mentoring Initiative led by Coach Lance Hickman, a key partner in Family Biz Builder’s tennis and life-skills programs.

Through this initiative, Kaleb transitioned from being a mentee to becoming a youth tennis coach, where he now helps younger players develop confidence, discipline, and love for the game—just as his mentors did for him.

Serving as a youth coach has given Kaleb a deeper sense of purpose. He’s learning that leadership isn’t about being perfect—it’s about showing up, giving back, and helping others rise. Whether teaching a proper serve or encouraging a beginner to keep trying, Kaleb is now the mentor he once needed.

This transformation embodies the true mission of Family Biz Builder: empowering youth not only to succeed but also to lift others along the way.

“Coach Hickman has helped me grow as a leader,” Kaleb says. “He’s taught me to stay focused, be patient, and always find a way to give back.”

A Testament to Character

Peggie A. Henderson, Executive Director of Family Biz Builder, expressed deep pride in Kaleb’s achievement:

“Kaleb’s NJTL Essay Contest win shows what hard work and character can achieve. We celebrate his success today and always!”

Kaleb’s story is more than a success—it’s a reminder of what’s possible when mentorship, community support, and personal faith come together. He represents the spirit of Family Biz Builder’s mission: empowering youth to strengthen their minds, build their character, and realize their full potential.

The Power of the NJTL Program

Family Biz Builder’s Sports & Fitness NJTL Program, supported by the USTA Foundation, uses tennis as a tool to teach leadership, sportsmanship, and life skills. Students like Kaleb learn that success isn’t just about winning matches—it’s about developing resilience, integrity, and confidence on and off the court.

Kaleb’s journey embodies those values, showing that every challenge can become a stepping stone toward success.

Congratulations, Kaleb!

We’re proud to celebrate Kaleb Phillips—a young man who reminds us that faith, hard work, and perseverance truly pay off. His story shines as an inspiration to all FBB participants and partners.

Way to go, Kaleb—you’ve set the bar high for the next generation of leaders!
